Lessons from Downton Abbey

Alison and I don't have cable. We're currently on the Dave Ramsey plan, and, well, we don't need it. So instead, like many households today, we have subscriptions to Netflix and Hulu+. A few months ago, The Office had a line mentioning Downton Abbey.

I've never seen the show, but everyone's talking about it. So, Alison and I watched an episode. Then we watched another, then all of Season 1 and 2. We're now on Season 3 and are loving it.

Truthfully, sometimes while watching the show, I wonder if a man should be doing this. In our culture, for men especially, certain things are okay for us to be interested in, and some are not. I think Downton Abbey falls on the wrong side of the line.

However, I'm sure that Downton Abbey is an excellent tool for teaching men to be better husbands.

Chivalry is not dead, only wounded. It's fair to say that most women believe it's the standard, not the exception. Watching Downton Abbey, men today can find unique ways to woo the woman they love. Most notably, perhaps, is the mail. The characters pour over their letters, and women today appreciate love letters like those characters.

It might be time for you to watch Downton Abbey and learn. You might like the results.
